About this webinar

Design public edges that people trust, understand, and choose to use. In this session, you’ll translate research into architectural intent: use CPTED principles without hostility (prospect, clear exits, natural surveillance), compose night environments that reassure (light for faces, paths, and corners—no glare), and structure planting for view-through safety (high canopy, low understory). You’ll learn to read and refine façades and thresholds using frontage mechanics—door presence, clear glazing at eye level, real shade, and humane seating—to convert passing into pausing. Leave with a practical framework to assess and iterate designs so users feel oriented, comfortable, and welcome—linking design decisions to tangible health, safety, and well-being outcomes.

Hosted by Natalie de Carvalho Jorge

Natalie is a Brazilian architect with professional experience in both the United States and Brazil. Her work focuses on how architecture influences human behavior, mental health, and social well-being — drawing from neuroscience, psychology, and environmental ethics. She also integrates classical design principles to promote balance, beauty, and a sense of belonging in the built environment. Natalie holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Colorado Denver and a Certificate in Classical Architecture from the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA). Now based in São Paulo, she leads an independent practice dedicated to human-centered, health-oriented design.

Upon completion, you'll be able to:

  1. Analyze how environmental continuity and psychological well-being factors inform aging-in-place strategies, and explain their implications for user mental health/well-being.
  2. Evaluate street-edge configurations using Mehta’s findings and differentiate frontage features that foster belonging and informal social support, advancing user welfare/well-being.
  3. Design public edges by integrating CPTED (prospect, natural surveillance, legible exits), view-through planting, and reassurance-based lighting to reduce fear and injury risk—a direct health/safety outcome.
  4. Synthesize an evidence-based concept narrative that justifies edge design decisions across continuity, social connection, and safety for informed stakeholder review.
