About this webinar

While the term ‘system’ is familiar, what does it mean to think in systems? For architects and designers, systems thinking is a critical tool that can be leveraged to gain a holistic view of the context within which you are working. With a wider world view and understanding of the larger context, you can design with the intention to solve the root cause of an issue rather than surface level symptoms. This course will alter your mindset: anticipating and assessing the ripple effects of your design choices, especially as they relate to social and environmental welfare, as everything is connected.

The content of this course has not been approved by the United Nations and does not reflect the views of the United Nations or its officials or Member States.

Hosted by Taleen Josefsson

Taleen is a Brooklyn-based architect and Passive House Consultant based in Brooklyn who applies a holistic approach to tackling the complex environmental and social issues relating to the built environment. She is devoted to promoting healthy, low-energy architectural solutions that strengthen local communities, economies, and biodiversity. Taleen's work includes research and analysis on building material reuse as a method for reducing our industry’s negative environmental impact, with a proposed circular working method of “Form Follows Availability." She is also an active volunteer in the Architects Climate Action Network and enjoys sharing the latest in sustainability and architectural research via her Instagram: @the_holistic_architect.

Upon completion, you'll be able to:

  1. Define a system and its components
  2. Recognize the system unknowns and areas requiring further understanding for health, safety and welfare
  3. Identify the root cause and leverage point(s) of an issue to determine your design objective
  4. Assess the down- and up-stream impacts on / of your proposed design intervention
