About this webinar

Outdoor lighting serves multiple objectives including the safety of people at night, but lighting also has unintended impacts collectively described as light pollution. In this course, participants will learn about the impacts of lighting (who, what, and how) and approaches to minimizing it in the design process. Emphasis will be on asking the right questions of clients and applying appropriate design tools for appropriate lighting.

Hosted by Mark S. Rea, PhD

Mark S. Rea, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Population Health Science and Policy at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He was formerly Professor of Architecture and Cognitive Sciences at the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and served as LRC Director from 1988 to 2017. Dr. Rea is well known for his research in circadian photobiology, mesopic vision, psychological responses to light, lighting engineering, and visual performance.

Dr. Rea is the author of more than 250 scientific and technical articles related to vision, lighting engineering, and human factors and was the editor-in-chief of the 8th and 9th editions of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Lighting Handbook. He has been elected Fellow of the Society of Light and Lighting (UK) and Fellow of the IES, and is a recipient of the IES Medal.

Upon completion, you'll be able to:

  1. Describe the different aspects of light pollution to clients and the general public.
  2. Distinguish the characteristics of outdoor safety lighting that impact light pollution.
  3. Analyze outdoor lighting site attributes and use patterns to determine lighting needs for optimal health and primary light pollution concerns.
  4. Interpret lighting design schematics and details that enhance the wellbeing of end users and as they impact light pollution outcomes.
