About this webinar

Explore the true potential of lighting as we delve beyond the well-known effects of 'blue' light on the circadian system to uncover comprehensive strategies for lighting design. Learn how to harness light's immediate effects on physiology for enhanced alertness, productivity, and well-being without disrupting health and circadian rhythms. Join us to master practical, health-promoting lighting solutions for today's interior environments.

Hosted by Mariana G. Figueiro, PhD

Mariana G. Figueiro, PhD, is the Director of the Light and Health Research Center at Mount Sinai and Professor in the Department of Population Health Science and Policy at the Icahn School of Medicine. She is well known for her research on the effects of light on human health, sustainability, circadian photobiology, and lighting for older adults. She holds a bachelor's in architectural engineering from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and a master's in lighting and a doctorate in multidisciplinary science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her master's and Ph.D. dissertation research focused on the human circadian response to light. Dr. Figueiro is a Fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society (FIES) and the author of more than 140 scientific articles in her field of research. She has brought attention to the significance of light and health as a topic of public interest through her TEDMED talk.

Upon completion, you'll be able to:

  1. Analyze the direct and phase-shifting effects of light on human physiology, including biomarkers such as melatonin and cortisol.
  2. Evaluate various types of lighting systems and their impacts on the circadian system and human health, distinguishing between immediate and phase-shifting effects.
  3. Synthesize findings from lab and field studies to understand the alerting effects of light on task performance and alertness.
  4. Design and apply lighting strategies that enhance alertness and productivity during both day and night, while minimizing disruptions to the circadian system.
