About this webinar

We live in a world of labels—descriptors responsible for a polarized human experience and hindered creativity. These labels prevent design professionals from providing the best possible people-centered solutions. They have made design seem out of reach for some people when well-designed spaces should be a standard for all, not a luxury for a few.

We will help you recognize the impact of labels, demographics and data on the design process. We will show how adjusting language, spearheading an inclusive design process and creating empathetic concepts will enhance community well-being and inspire the next generation of design professionals.

The content of this course has not been approved by the United Nations and does not reflect the views of the United Nations or its officials or Member States.

Hosted by Kia Weatherspoon

The design voice of impact and change - Kia Weatherspoon, NCIDQ, ASID - has spent the last 15 years defying every design stereotype. The most damaging: interior design is a luxury reserved for a few. Her voice, advocacy for Design Equity™, and design practice have shifted the narrative, making interior design a standard for all. An advocate and educator in business leadership, equity, and diversity, Kia has been recognized as an Interior Design Magazine HIP Designer for Good and a recipient of the International Interior Design Association Luna Textile/ Anna Hernandez Visionary Award and the CREW DC Raising Up Your Voice award.

Upon completion, you'll be able to:

  • Identify harmful labels, demographics and data.
  • Create empathetic design concepts.
  • Propose firm or project team changes to support a more inclusive design process.
  • Propose mentorship programs and community outreach.
