Many people who encounter poverty, as well as related problems such as homelessness, crime, discrimination, mental illness, violence, and other societal issues experience persistent, and sometimes debilitating ‘toxic’ trauma. This presentation suggests that people can be assisted by designing empathetically for trauma, prioritizing strategies that support well-being and help preserve dignity. Through this course’s information and case studies, you will learn about the issues surrounding trauma and the guidelines of trauma-informed care, and the emerging principles of trauma-informed design that can help you create effective built environments that assist people in need.

Jill Pable is professor and chair of the Interior Architecture & Design Department at Florida State University. She holds degrees in Interior Design and a Ph.D. degree in Instructional Technology with specialization in architecture, is NCIDQ-certified, and a WELL accredited professional. She facilitates Design Resources for Homelessness, a non-profit knowledge resource featured in FastCompany, National Public Radio, the Chicago Tribune, and Architectural Digest. She is a TEDxFSU speaker and was noted by DesignIntelligence as one of the 30 Most Admired Design Educators in the United States in 2015. She believes that design can make life more interesting, fulfilling and humane.
