South Carolina Architect Continuing Education Requirements

South Carolina State Flag Continuing EducationLicensed South Carolina architects are required to complete 24 hours of Continuing Education credits every 2 years.
  • CE Requirement:  24 Continuing Education (CE) credits total, 12 credits per year. All 24 CE credits must qualify as Health, Safety & Welfare (HSW) credits.
  • Renewal Date: June 30 of odd-numbered years.
  • CE Reporting Cycle: Biennial - required credits must be earned in the two-year period running from July 1 of odd-numbered years through June 30 of the following odd-numbered year (e.g. July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2023 for the June 30, 2023 renewal).
  • Acceptable Coursework: The South Carolina Board of Architectural Examiners does not pre-approve courses or providers of continuing education. Courses approved by the AIA under the HSW designation are generally accepted. Use your professional judgment to determine if an activity meets the Board's criteria as summarized in this post and as detailed in the Board's Code of Regulations. Final discretion is up to the Board.
  • Reporting of Credits:  Providers cannot report continuing education credits earned to the Board. Licensees are required to attest that they are in compliance with the Board’s CE requirements on the biennial renewal applicationDesign Arts Seminars reports credits electronically whenever possible.
  • Tracking of Credits: Members are responsible for maintaining proof of successful completion of continuing education activities for at least 2 years from date credits are claimed. 
  • Audit:  All architects licensed in South Carolina are subject to audit by the Board and upon request will need to provide documentation to support the credits claimed at renewal.
  • Carry Over: Not permitted.
