Havana, Cuba
500 Years of Architectural History Awaits

SPRING 2021

Itinerary  |  Packages  |  Save My Seat  |  Questions  |  Photos

There is something magical about Havana. One long walk through its narrow streets and plazas and I was in love.

Maybe it was the music, the colors, the art, and laughter pulsating throughout the streets. Maybe it was the 500 years of architectural history that awaits you every step of the way - crystallized in time, left untouched or painstakingly restored. Maybe it was simply the spirit of the Cuban people. Their resilience, kindness, generosity, passion, and creativity. Maybe it was knowing that I was walking in the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway, Wifredo Lam, Celia Cruz, and also those of DAS' founder Manuel Ponce who passed away in 2001 and had fond memories of his childhood in Havana. Maybe it was all the unanswered questions about how to preserve the city's soul as it attempts to modernize.

Whatever it was, I have been back twice since that first walk. And I can't wait to accompany you on your journey. Four local architects will share with you their city's secrets, its urban evolution and the challenges they face in trying to preserve its architectural and cultural heritage. During your time there, Havana will be our classroom and our playground for a masterclass in historic preservation. Camila Cabello famously sings about having left half her heart in Havana. I have no doubt you will too.
