Licensed Maryland architects are required to complete 12 hours of Continuing Education every calendar year.

  • CE Requirement:  12 Learning Units (LUs) per calendar year, all of which must qualify as Health, Safety & Welfare (HSW) subjects.
  • Renewal Date: Every 2 years based on original licensure date.
  • CE Reporting Cycle:  Biennial - Licensees are required to earn 12 HSW hours of continuing education each calendar year so that all 24 hours have been earned by the license renewal date. i.e . LUs earned between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2023, count toward the 2024 renewal date.
  • Acceptable Coursework:  The Maryland Board of Architects accepts courses approved by AIA under the HSW designation. Courses not approved may be submitted to the Maryland Board of Architects for review and approval. It is up to the licensee to determine whether the activity meets the Board’s requirements and final discretion is up to the Board.
  • Reporting of Credits:  Providers cannot report continuing education credits earned to the Maryland Board. Registrants are required to attest that they are in compliance with the Board’s CE requirements on the biennial renewal application. Design Arts Seminars reports credits electronically whenever possible.
  • Tracking of Credits:  Records of successful completion of continuing education should be kept for at least 2 years following the license renewal for which credits were claimed.
  • Audit:  All architects licensed in Maryland are subject to audit by the Board and upon request will need to provide documentation to support the LUs claimed at renewal.
  • Carry-over Credits:  Not permitted.
