Illinois Interior Design Continuing Education Requirements

Illinois state seal

Illinois Interior Designers are required to complete 10 hours of Continuing Education (CE) every 2 years as a condition for license renewal.

  • CE Requirement: 10 hours of Continuing Education (CE), all 10 CE must be Health, Safety & Welfare (HSW) credits.
  • Renewal Date:  August 31 of odd-numbered years.
  • CE Cycle:  Biennial - Required credits must be earned in the 2-year period running from September 1 through August 31 of the following odd-numbered year (i.e. September 1, 2023 through August 31, 2025 for the August 31, 2025 renewal).
  • Acceptable Coursework:  The Illinois Board of Registered Interior Design Professionals does not pre-approve courses or providers of continuing education. Courses approved by IDCEC under the HSW designation are generally acceptable. Use your professional judgment to determine if an activity meets the Board's criteria as summarized in this post and - most importantly - as detailed in the rules.
  • Reporting of Credits:  Applicants certify to compliance with the CE requirements on the renewal form. Providers cannot report continuing education credits earned to the Illinois Board, neither can registrants. Design Arts Seminars reports credits electronically whenever possible.
  • Tracking of Credits:  Licensees are responsible for maintaining proof of successful completion of continuing education activities for at least 6 years from date of completion.
  • Audit:  All interior designers licensed in Illinois are subject to audit by the Board and upon written request will need to provide documentation to support the credits claimed at renewal. Course completion certificates and transcripts are accepted as documentation.
