Iowa State Flag Continuing EducationRegistered Iowa architects are required to complete 24 hours of Continuing Education every 2 years.

  • CE Requirement:  24 Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) in Public Protection OR Health, Safety & Welfare (HSW) topics.
  • Renewal Date: June 30 - if your last name begins with letters 'A' through 'K', your renewal is in even-numbered years. If your last name begins with letters 'L' through 'Z', renewals are odd-numbered years.
  • CE Reporting Cycle:  Biennial - Architects licensed in an even-number year are required to renew their license by June 30 of the following even-numbered year (2022, 2024, etc.). Architects licensed in an odd-number year are required to renew their license by June 30 of the following odd-numbered year (2021, 2023, etc.).
  • Acceptable Coursework: The Iowa Architectural Examining Board does not pre-approve courses or providers. AIA-approved courses are generally acceptable but it is the registrant's responsibility to use their professional judgment to determine if an activity meets the Board's criteria as summarized in this post and as detailed on Board's website. Final discretion is up to the board.
  • Reporting of Credits:  Providers cannot report continuing education credits earned to the Board. Registrants are required to report and attest to the completion of mandatory continuing education. Design Arts Seminars reports credits electronically whenever possible.
  • Tracking of Credits:  Registrants are responsible for maintaining proof of successful completion of continuing education activities for at least 2 years following the registration renewal for which credits were claimed.
  • Audit:  Registrants are subject to a random, in-depth audit by the Board to verify compliance with continuing education requirements.
  • Carry-over Credits:  Not permitted.
